The Conference of Nigeria Political
Parties, CNPP, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to urgently order the
Inspector General of the Police to re-open the secretariat of the “New Peoples
Democratic Party”, PDP.
The police had on Saturday sealed
off the premises of the Kawu Baraje-led New PDP.
Reacting to the closure, yesterday, CNPP
spokesman, Osita Okechukwu, said, the party was predicating the call on the
constitutional and patriotic mandate of Mr. President to at all times protect,
and defend the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
The group said the President should
rule according to the provisions of the said constitution, which guarantees
freedom of association, security and welfare of the citizenry.
CNPP stressed that President Jonathan
must at all times supervise the security agencies, less they may out of
overzealousness infringe on the freedom and inalienable rights of citizens to
associate, as is the case in this instance.
They also faulted those asking the New PDP to muster
the courage and leave the Old PDP.
