Reports reaching our news desk from
Benin City, Edo State, say Civil Rights Lawyer and Senior Activist of Nigeria,
Chief Mike Ozekhome has been set free by his abductors.
The kidnappers had requested for a
hundred million naira ransom but we could not immediately confirm if it
was paid to the abductors.

Chief Ozekhome and his driver were
kidnapped by yet to be identified gunmen at about 3pm on Friday, August 23,
along the Benin-Auchi road in Edo State. His security details died in the
ensuing gun fire.
Several
persons have been seized in Edo State in recent times, despite crackdown on kidnappers
in the state. Before going on recess, the State House of Assembly approved a
bill proscribing death penalty for kidnappers in Edo State.

The bill has not been signed into law by
Governor Oshiomole. Already, over five hundred suspected kidnappers are
awaiting trial in the state
