The Daura Emirate
Council in Katsina State has cancelled the annual Maulud(the birthday of Prophet Mohammed) festival in honour of
the Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, who was attacked by gunmen on January 19,
which killed six people and injured others.
The Emir of Daura, Umar Faruk told a
delegation from Baure Local Government, who visited his palace to commiserate
with him on the attack, that the festival earlier slated to begin today, had
been cancelled. The event locally known as Sallar Gani is part of the emirate's
festivals, in which indigenes of the area return home from across the world to
fraternise with loved ones. The one week celebration involves the traditional
durbar, and other traditional sports and serves as a period for the renewal of
allegiance to the emir.
Meanwhile, the Federal Executive
Council has condemned last Saturday’s attack on the convoy of the Emir of Kano,
Ado Bayero.
Minister
of Information, Labaran Maku, told State House correspondents after Wednesday`s
meeting, which was presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo, that council
particularly sympathized with the emir over the incident. Mr Maku reiterated
the determination of the government to hunt and prosecute all those behind the
attack and urged Nigerians to continue to support the ongoing battle against
religious extremists.
Council
also approved a mandatory training to be conducted by the Federal Road Safety
Corps for drivers of all serving governors, ministers and other public office
holders.
