The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) says
it has prosecuted over two hundred electoral offenders from the conduct of the
2011 general elections.
Chairman of the commission, Professor Attahiru Jega
revealed this on Wednesday in Abuja at a two day INEC/Civil society dialogue on plans
and programs towards the 2015 general elections .
He said the commission will not relent in its effort to
sanitise the electoral process as all the persons involved in the fraud have
been convicted by the court of law.
The INEC boss however made case for establishment of the
electoral offences tribunal, saying it does not have the required capacity to
address all cases bordering on electoral crimes.
Professor Jega who also briefed the civil society representatives
on the commissions agenda for the 2015 general elections disclosed plans to
launch a continuous voters registration process in early 2013.
He said the commission will not demand for additional
fund from government to fund the exercise as it
has enough direct data capture machines and even in excess to distribute to secondary schools
across the country to aid computer education.
INEC also set a 2014 target to conclude the production
and distribution of over seventy million permanent voters card.
Correspondent Helen Awhotu reports that other critical
issues that top the commissions agenda for 2013 includes, delineation of
constituencies, recruitment and training of electoral personnel, review of the
existing guidelines for political parties operations among others.
