FLOOD: NIGERIA NEEDS $38M AID--- UN
The United Nations says Nigeria will require over five billion naira (about $38million) in emergency assistance in aid of about 2.1 million people displaced by massive flooding in Nigeria.
Spokesperson for the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Jens Laerke said this today, (Friday). Laerke said the urgent aid are in form of shelter, food, water and schools mainly in farming and fishing communities on the banks of the Niger River.
Statistics from the National Emergency Agency (NEMA) office indicates that Nigeria’s worst flooding in at least half a century killed over 360 people and affected over 7 million people.
The agency further said that the flood disaster have displaced 2.1 million people and injured about 18,282 people.
The Department of Petroleum Resources, estimates that flooding in the Niger Delta region, has disrupted oil production at about 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) – more than a fifth of Nigeria`s total oil output. Agriculture was also negatively affected.
