Security
operatives are searching for the perpetrator of today’s suicide bomb blast
in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The
bomb ripped through a busy market in Maiduguri at about 1pm, killing at least
seventeen people and wounding others. The usually busy area, popular with
GSM market (Kasuwan Jagol in hausa) erupted in pandemonium shortly after the
attack, as people and traders scampered for safety on hearing gun shots. Military Spokesmen Colonel Mohammed Dole, said a
suspect is in custody, while efforts are on to identify those behind the
attack.
Borno State Police Commissioner,
Lawan Tanko said initial reports put the death toll at 17, warning that the
figure could rise.
Reacting to the attack, Governor
Kashim Shettima described it as demonic, coming at a time the state was witnessing
enduring peace.
He promised to foot the medical
bill of the injured, while consoling families of the dead.
Governor Shettima urged Borno indigenes to
continue to support the military in the fight against terrorism.
