RIVER STATE GOVT. FAULTS REINSTATEMENT OF OBI AKPOR LGA CHAIRMAN.

The Rivers State Government says Justice Adama Iyayi-Laminkara erred in reinstating the suspended Obio Akpor Local Government Council Chairman. The State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Ibim Semenitari disclosed this in a statement  while reacting today's court ruling.  The Rivers State government noted in the statement that the trial judge acted in total disregard of the Court of Appeal, which is currently entertaining an appeal in respect of the matter.

Mrs. Seminitari explained under the rules of court, where there is a subsisting ruling essentially from the court above, lower courts are as a rule expected to stay action pending the determination of the appeal. The statement however said  the state government will abide by the ruling of the court and appealed to the people of the state to be calm and law abiding. It may interest you to know that the Rivers State Government had filed an appeal for a stay of execution of the judgment while the ongoing matter that is being heard by the court above is billed for Thursday, the 28th of November, 2013.
Earlier this morning, a High court in Port Harcourt reinstated the suspended Obio Akpor Council chairman Timothy Nsirim. The Trial judge, Justice Adama Iyayi-Laminkara said the development was due to lack of fair hearing by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
