The
Federal Road Safety Commission has advised motorists to be safety-conscious as
they experience foggy weather, and late evening mist with the onset of
Harmatan.
Mr Jonas
Agwu, the commission’s public education officer, who gave the advice in a
statement on Thursday in Abuja, said the warning became necessary to avoid road
accidents.
``The
weather condition usually occurs when temperature drops to a dew point of
saturated air which condenses to reduce visibility drastically.’’
It said
the reduction of vision to 400 metres or less could result in hazardous
driving.
The
statement recalled that between 6 a.m. and 7.30 a.m. on Monday a thick fog
enveloped the 30 km stretch between Yangoji and Awawa of the Abuja-Lokoja
Highway.
It noted
that the fog created visibility challenges for motorists and warned motorists
across the country to drive with lights on low beam to avoid reflections caused
by high beams which could result in poor visibility.
``Your
task as a safety-conscious driver is to know how to adjust your driving to meet
conditions on the road or to know how to maintain a modicum of safety when you
find yourself in bad weather.’’
The state
urged motorists to continue to obey traffic rules and regulations, assuring
that the commission was intensifying efforts to ensure reduction of accidents
throughout the ember months and the yuletide. (NAN)
