NIGERIAN JOURNALISTS MARK WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY

Nigerian journalists and their counterparts across the globe are today observing World Press Freedom Day. This year’s celebration marks the 20th anniversary since the The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993. The day seeks to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom; assess the state of press freedom throughout the world; defend the media from attacks on their independence and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media”. This highlights issues of safety of journalists, combating impunity for crimes against freedom of expression, and securing a free and open Internet as the precondition for online safety.
The day is being celebrated with slected events by the Nigerian Union of Journalists.
