NIGERIAN GUILD OF EDITORS ASK POLITICIANS TO AVOID OVERHEATING THE POLITY

The Nigerian Guild of Editors has asked politicians to stop all actions that are currently overheating the nation’s polity.
In a communiqué at the end of its Standing Committee meeting on Friday in Lagos, the guild expressed concern on the recent conduct of some political leaders, warning that it could derail the nation’s democracy.

The communiqué, which was signed by President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Femi Adesina, and its Secretary, Isaac Ighure, equally urged all parties in the current strike by university lecturers to return to the negotiating table.
The NGE also noted the efforts by certain groups to revive some provisions of the Nigerian Press Council, which a competent court of law had voided.
The Editors frowned at the recent re-arraignment of two journalists, urging the federal government to maintain whatever considerations that informed the withdrawal for the case in the first instance.
The communiqué also appealed to the government to waive import duties on all news media inputs, especially newsprint and broadcast equipment.
