Thousands of youths under the aegis of Grassroots
Development Initiative, GDI, today staged a peaceful protest at the Port
Harcourt international Airport Omagwa against the visit of some northern elites
and some governors to Rivers state. The group’s Secretary General, Samuel
Wonosike said they are tired of the incessant visit of northern governors and
stake holders to Governor Amaechi. He said the northern leaders should focus on
the insecurity challenges in their region rather than coming to Rivers state to
join issues.
Correspondent Emeka Ortuka reports that group loyal to
Governor Amaechi, Ikwere Youth Movement were chanting slogans in favor of the
governor but GDI interrupted them. The northern leaders and governors who are
at the Government house to visit Governor Amaechi, include Governor Babangida
Aliyu of Niger state, Governor Kwankwanso of Kano state, Governor Murtala Nyako
of Adamawa state, Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa state, Nobel Laureate, Wole
Soyinka, amongst others. Our correspondent reports that the GDI protesters, who
were seen dancing to the rhythm of their drums, had placards with inscriptions
like Murtala Nyako leave our resources alone, Wole Soyinka solve problem in the
west first. The situation is said to have caused heavy traffic at the airport.
