As Nigerians continue to grapple with
the effects of current industrial action by medical doctors, the Nigerian
Medical Association (NMA) says it will sustain the on-going warning strike
action until the federal government shows signs of fulfilling its minimum
demands.
President of the Association, Dr
Osahon Enabulele gave the resolve in a statement published yesterday in Abuja.
According to Enabulele, the decision
was taken at the end of an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting
of the NMA, on Thursday, December 19. The NEC meeting was called to assess the
on-going warning strike.
The NEC reaffirmed the association’s
decision to limit the duration of the warning strike action ”in deference to
the yuletide season and as a mark of its appreciation of the appeals of
well-meaning Nigerians”.
The association however warned that
a total strike would commence if the raised issues were not satisfactorily
resolved by Jan. 6, 2014.
The NMA NEC thanked public spirited Nigerians
and the media for their understanding, prayers and support.
The NMA began a five-day warning
strike in public health institutions on Wednesday, Dec. 18; over workplace
conditions, health sector challenges and the conditions of service.
