The Kano State Hisba Board announced
yesterday that it destroyed more than two hundred thousand bottles of assorted
beer worth millions of naira last year.
Director-General of the board, Dr.
Abba Sufi, told journalists in Kano that the items were seized from dealers and
other members of the public across the 44 local government areas of the state.
He added that the Board also secured
the conviction of all those found guilty of the offence.
Dr Sufi said it is illegal under
the 2001 Kano State Islamic Law, to drink, sale, consume, produce or transport
alcohol in the state.
He equally said that the board
received reports from members of the public on the re-emergence of prostitutes
in some parts of the city, adding that 66 suspected prostitutes had been
arrested in the last two weeks.
Dr Sufi said the state government had set up a
hundred-man task force to enforce the ban on street begging in the state.
