CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido has been unveiled as the new Emir of Kano.
Announcing
this today, Secretary to Kano State Government, Suleiman Bichi, said the state
government received the recommendations of the four- “kingmakers.
He added
that Allah has conferred on Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the former governor of the
central bank, the successor to the late emir, Ado Bayero. The kingmakers considered a number of names before
forwarding same to the state government for approval.
Sanusi is
the grandson of the late emir’s brother, who reigned briefly in the 1960s.
Until his new position, Sanusi
was the title Dan Majen Kano.
The Emir
of Kano is the second most-influential Muslim leader, after the Sultan of
Sokoto. The third most influential monarch is the Shehu of Borno.
Shortly
after the announcement, some aggrieved people took to the streets in protest. While the protests was on, some youths and adults also took to some major streets to celebrate Sanusi's new status. Security were immediately heightened to prevent a major incident.
Mallam Sanusi was suspended in February this
year as Governor of the CBN, following alleged financial recklessness and
misconduct. This followed the controversy trailing his alleged missing
20billion dollars NNPC fund.
