The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation has
stressed the need for quality infrastructure for meaningful development in the
trade and investment sector in Nigeria.
UNIDO’s Country Representative and Regional Director,
Patrick Kormawa made the disclosure yesterday in Abuja at the Technical
Sub-committee of Project Steering committee.
Mr Kormawa noted that the European Union has budgeted
about 12million Euros to help build National Quality Infrastructure in areas of
Metrology, National Accreditation body, conformity assessment bodies and
accreditation which is key building strong institutions that can bring about
development.
He noted that once these measures are in place, trade and
investment will be strengthened, just as made in Nigerian goods will compete
favourably with international standards.
In his remarks, the section Head European Union, Juan
Casla commended UNIDO for the laudable initiative.
The event was attended by
representatives of business communities, federal ministry of industry, trade
and investment, standards organisation of Nigeria, amongst others.
