COVID-19: MIN. OF STATE FCT APPLAUDS SUCCESSFUL DISTRIBUTION OF PALLIATIVES.

FCT Minister of state, Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, has attributed the success of the FCT Palliative distribution exercise to the sacrifices made by personnel drafted in from various security and paramilitary outfits in the Territory.

The Minister stated this on Thursday during the FCT Administration's donation of 500 bags of 10kg rice, 250 cartons of noodles and 250 packs of table water to security personnel.

She also used the occasion to commend the personnel, who are also involved in enforcing COVID-19 lockdown directives, for ensuring that so far, there is no incident of harassment encountered in the FCT.

Responding, Chairman of the FCT Ministerial Task team on COVID-19 lockdown enforcement, Ikharo Attah, who thanked the Minister for the initiative, noted that it demonstrates that the FCTA actually cares for gallant personnel.

HOUSE OF REPs. & NGF LOCK HORNS OVER INFECTIOUS DISEASES BILL.

The House of Representatives has rejected a request by the Nigeria Governors Forum for the suspension of further deliberations on the much talked about Control of the Infectious Diseases Bill.

The lawmakers made their position known in a statement by its spokesman, Benjamin Kalu.

The statement, which accused the former Speaker Aminu Tambuwal of misleading the Forum, due to partisan interests, noted that the call is coming late as the bill has already been scheduled for public hearing where Nigerians from all walks of life will have the opportunity to make their input.

The statement however added that there is no provision in the constitution for concurrence of state houses of assembly or state governors for bills such as the Control of Infectious Diseases unlike constitution amendment matters.

You will recall that the Nigerian Governors Forum had asked the National Assembly to step down the Bill to allow for wider consultations with stakeholders.

It also set up a three-member committee made up of governors Aminu Masari of Katsina, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto and Simon Lalong of Plateau state to interface with the leadership of the National Assembly over the issue.   This was part of a communique issued after the 8th COVID-19 teleconference meeting of the Forum on Wednesday.

The communique said the governors raised serious concern at the proposed Control of Infectious Diseases Bill, 2020 introduced by the House of Representatives.

The Nigerian Governors Forum deplored the lack of consultation with State governments who are at the forefront of the epidemic.

MEDICAL TRIP TO INDIA: KADUNA COURT RULES ON ELZAKZAKY'S APPLICATION TOMORROW

A Kaduna State High Court presided over by Justice D.H. Khobo, will tomorrow, Thursday entertain the application of the leader of Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zazaky and wife, Zinat, seeking to travel to India for medical attention.

The IMN leader is being prosecuted for alleged culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace among other charges.

Kaduna State Director of Public Prosecution, Dari Bayero announced this to correspondents in Kaduna on Wednesday.

You will recall that Justice Gideon Kurada, had on April 25, adjourned El-Zakzaky’s trial indefinitely.

This is to enable the judge serve on the panel of the Presidential and National Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal in Yobe.

Before the indefinite adjournment, the court had on January 22nd, ordered the Kaduna State Government to avail Elzakzaky and his wife Zinat, access to medical care.
